AmSafe Launches New Tarian RPG Armor Products

AmSafe® Inc., a leading global provider of engineered restraint systems, today announced that its AmSafe Bridport business unit has launched Tarian Xtreme, an innovative textile armor system used on military vehicles for protection against rocket propelled grenades (RPGs).

Tarian Xtreme, an extension of AmSafe Bridport's Tarian product line, is extremely lightweight and highly effective at defending against RPGs.  The Tarian technology has been rigorously tested in the U.K. by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, an agency of the Ministry of Defence (MOD), and in the U.S. by its Department of Defense counterpart DARPA to include over 400 live firing shots. This testing has verified both a high level of performance and a multi-hit capability.

Given its unique design and lightweight properties, Tarian Xtreme can provide a weight saving of up to 90% when compared to traditional steel bar or slat armor and 75% when compared to aluminum bar armor. The weight saving allows additional protection to be applied elsewhere on a vehicle or can translate to improved vehicle mobility, reliability and transportability. In addition, those vehicles that cannot accommodate the added weight of traditional RPG armor, such as the HMMWV, can now be outfitted and protected with Tarian Xtreme.

Along with Tarian Xtreme, AmSafe has also introduced Tarian QuickShield, an innovative emergency replacement kit for damaged or missing bar armor. Tarian QuickShield allows damaged or missing bar armor to be rapidly replaced in the field, thereby enabling a vehicle to continue to perform its mission without loss of protection.

We continue to improve upon and expand the applications of the Tarian technology and in these products we have pushed the boundaries to create offerings with distinct operational and cost advantages over other types of RPG protection, stated Terence Lyons, CEO of AmSafe.  Neal McKeever, director and general manager of defense for AmSafe Bridport added, our close partnerships with the U.K. MOD and U.S. defense agencies have enabled AmSafe to develop solutions that are ultra light and highly effective. We are excited to be able to provide this revolutionary RPG protection and to contribute to the safety of our troops.

Tarian was originally introduced in 2009 in close collaboration with the UK MOD, and is currently being used in theatre on British Army Heavy Equipment Transporters. Developed as a lightweight modular system, Tarian can be configured for a wide range of vehicle and static applications.
